Getting the Right Blonde - It's Easier than You Think

“Far out, I’ve had enough,” exclaimed a new client on the phone. “You’re my last resort,” she added when she arrived for her first hair colour appointment. No pressure right? Lol!

Follow These Steps and You’ll Never Have Another Bad Hair Day!

In all honesty, I can’t begin to tell you how many times I hear that in our salon - another blonde hair colour to the rescue. It doesn’t need to be this way!

Because here’s the thing - no-one, and I mean NO-ONE, should have to put up with yellow or brassy blonde hair. Now, without getting all technical and boring on you - let me explain a little of what goes in to getting the perfect blonde hair shade. And when I say, ‘blonde hair shade’ - I’m not just talking white blonde hair either - there are many shades of blonde hair - even one that we call ‘Legally Blonde’ - where ‘sun-kissed’ lighter pieces enhance your darker hair (and those lighter pieces shouldn't be ginger, either!)

“But you won’t know this of course, as you lay back at the basin - full of trust as your blonde colour is rinsed and your toner applied…”

First of all, a blonde colour will often go yellow, brassy or just won’t last, simply because the hair wasn’t taken to the right blonde level in the first place - and then, believe me, no amount of toner will hold it’s shade for long. You may even have left your salon happy with your shade, but the original level will come shining through - usually pretty soon - and it’s hello to yellow, brassy, ginger… again.

But you won’t know this of course, as you lay back in the basin - full of trust as your blonde colour is rinsed and your toner applied - you have no way of knowing if your ‘right level’ has been attained. You also won’t know if the chosen toner was the correct mix for your blonde shade.

Let me say here, that toners for blonde hair are very specialised.

It’s not a matter of squeezing a bit of hair colour from a tube and popping it on. To get a blonde hair shade perfect, we may even mix as little as 3 grams of 3 different types of toners to get the perfect toner for your hair.

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL!

Before we colour anyone’s hair, there are are number of things to consider before we start. Most people are not the same, their hair is not the same, therefore there is no single answer. Every person is unique. So, the way your blonde hair is coloured should be totally unique and personalised to you.

AMONG OTHER THINGS WE MUST CONSIDER:

  • Your Hair texture
  • Your Natural Base Hair colour
  • Your Desired Blonde Hair Shade (one that enhances your skin tone and eyes!)
  • Any Previous Hair Colour you have in your Hair
  • The Condition and Health of your Hair

Then, and only then, should a plan be made to get to your desired blonde.

Whether your shade is Dirty Blonde, Strawberry Blonde, Dark Blonde, Caramel Blonde, Clear Blonde, Ash Blonde or Platinum Blonde (the list goes on) - your shade should be clear. Hey, even a beautiful golden blonde should never look brassy or yellow!

And like anything, if you want a great job done, get an expert. Unfortunately a lot of hairdressers say they're a blonde colour expert, but we only need to take a look at some of the blonde hair on the streets of Brisbane to know there are many hairdressers who quite clearly aren’t.

The next step is to look after your blonde hair - keep your blonde hair healthy - and that will make a big difference to it’s shine and overall colour.
